Special thanks to the following organizations, companies, and individuals for their contributions.AWS Foundation Nina Starr Braunwald AwardThe endowment for the Nina Starr Braunwald Award was established by her husband, Dr. Eugene Braunwald. Dr. Nina Starr Braunwald was one of the first women to perform open heart surgery, the first woman to be certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and the first to be elected to the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. She developed several early mitral valve prostheses which bear her name. After her death in 1992, Dr. Eugene Braunwald donated $30,000 to set up the initial endowment and donated an additional $10,000 in 2011 to support the annual operating costs of the award. AWS Foundation Past Presidents Honorary Member AwardThe endowment for the Past Presidents Honorary Member Award was established in 2011. The Distinguished Member Award was renamed in that year in recognition of both the legacy and the generous endowment provided by the following AWS Past Presidents (1988-2011), each of whom contributed to the $32,000 endowment.
AWS Foundation Hilary Sanfey Outstanding Resident AwardThe $80,000 endowment for the Outstanding Resident Award was established by AWS Past President Dr. Hilary Sanfey. The award was renamed in 2011 to recognize this generous donation. AWS Foundation Dr. Sally Abston Distinguished Member AwardThe $35,000 endowment for the Dr. Sally Abston Distinguished Member Award was created by Dr. Courtney Townsend together with former colleagues and friends of Dr. Abston at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Galveston, in honor of the exemplary inspiration Dr. Abston gave to so many people throughout her career. The first award was presented in 2018. The following contributed generously to the endowment:
AWS Foundation Patricia Numann Outstanding Medical Student AwardThe AWS Foundation Board, with the assistance of donations primarily from AWS Past Presidents, created a $90,000 endowment to allow the award to be presented in perpetuity. The following have contributed to this award since the start of the fundraising campaign in June 2020:
