Call for Applicants: AWS-SURGERY Reviewer Academy

Calling all mentors and mentees! Join the Association of Women Surgeons and SURGERY for a 12-month program where you will learn why and how to peer review, how to review a manuscript, basic statistical understanding, diversity, equity, and inclusion issues, how to get involved in peer review, and more!

About the Program:

  • 12-month program (11/2023-10/2024)
  • 12 mentees and 12 mentors
  • Formal Peer Review Curriculum (monthly webinars):
  • Why and How to Peer Review
  • How to Review a Manuscript
  • Basic statistical understanding
  • Diversity Equity, and Inclusion Issues
  • How to Get Involved in Peer Review
  • Journal Club
  • And More!
  • Opportunity to review three (3) manuscripts per year for major surgical journals (including SURGERY and the American Journal of Surgery)
  • With oversight from mentors
  • Online message board to facilitate mentor-mentee discussion and feedback
  • Guest appearances from SURGERY Editors-in-Chief and AWS Editors
  • Certificate of Completion at the end of the program


Applicant Requirements:

  • Permission to participate from Program Director (mentees only) 


Requirements for Mentees

  • Must be AWS member
  • Must be in surgical residency or fellowship
  • Willing to commit to monthly webinars (80% attendance required)
  • Willing to review three (3) manuscripts over the course of the year


Requirements for Mentors:

  • Must be AWS member
  • Must be in surgical practice
  • Must have experience doing peer review
  • Willing to attend monthly webinars and give/host one webinar per year
  • Willing to mentor mentees through peer review of three (3) manuscripts per year
