AWS Invites You to Submit Your Nomination for the Council of the American Board of Surgery

The American Board of Surgery has moved from representational to competency-based composition for its membership. AWS has the opportunity to nominate up to three nominees from their membership to serve on the American Board of Surgery Council.

Nominations to the Council of the American Board of Surgery

The Council of the ABS seeks nominees to serve a six-year term. The Council serves as a resource of knowledge, skill, wisdom, and expertise for the organization, and is where issues that cross specialties are discussed. The Council consists of a diverse group of surgeons across a spectrum of practice and experience and includes approximately 30 members from across the specialties recognized by the ABS.

Council members each serve on one of the five ABS specialty boards (General Surgery Board, Vascular Surgery Board, Pediatric Surgery Board, Complex General Surgical Oncology Board, or Trauma Burns and Critical Care Board) and one or more of the five Council Committees (Assessment Committee, Diplomates and Surgeons in Practice Committee, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, Education and Training Committee, and/or Research Committee).

In addition to commitment, availability, loyalty, and ability to keep confidence, individuals with one or more of the following characteristics are sought:
• Artificial Intelligence
• Change Management
• Competency-Based Assessment
• Educational Assessment Newer Techniques
• Experience/Expertise in EPAs
• Underserved Critical Access

Emphasis will be placed on elements of diversity across all dimensions, including race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, or other elements that bring a different voice to the table.

The time commitment including exams is approximately 14-16 days/year, including both in-person and virtual meetings Nominees will be accepted from societies, peers, or self-nomination.
